Have you ever thought peace was something you had to earn like a perfect, quiet mind free of thoughts, worries, or distractions? I used to think so too. I thought peace was a flawless yoga flow or a meditation session where nothing pulled me away.

But the more I practiced, the more I learned that peace isn’t the absence of thought but it’s the space beneath it.

🧘‍♀️ When the Mind Resists Stillness

When we sit in silence, our thoughts rush in. The mind resists the stillness because quiet feels unfamiliar. The ego likes to “know,” while peace is the great “unknown.”

📜 Wisdom from the Yoga Sutras

In Yoga Sutra 1.16 — Tatpara-puruṣayoḥ guṇa-vaitṛṣṇyam, we’re reminded that non-attachment is the highest form of freedom. It’s not about shutting your mind down, it’s about loosening your grip on everything that tries to control you: the fear, the chatter, the endless doing.

And then, when life gets noisy again, which it wil Yoga Sutra 1.17 — Vitarka-vicāra-ānanda-asmitārūpa-anugamāt samprajñātaḥ shows us the way to stay calm in the chaos. It’s a gentle four step awareness that helps you meet each moment clearly:

  • Vitarka: Breathe and notice your breath.
  • Vicāra: Feel your body move with life’s rhythm.
  • Ānanda: Sense the quiet joy that comes from simply being.
  • Asmita: Rest in your presence. You are already whole.

Peace isn’t found in perfect conditions, it’s found in your capacity to be aware, even when things aren’t quiet. Some days the mind will wander, some days it won’t. Both are okay.

Take three minutes a day to just sit and breathe. Watch your thoughts appear and drift away like leaves on a stream. When life feels too fast, return to your breath and let your awareness hold you steady.
